Frequently Asked Questions

TabLens is a free, browser-based tool designed for Tableau developers and data analysts. Upload a .twb or .twbx Tableau workbook file and instantly extract all embedded metadata — worksheets, data sources, calculated fields, and more — without needing a Tableau Desktop license. Whether you are auditing an inherited workbook, preparing documentation, or exploring field dependencies, TabLens gives you a structured view of everything inside your workbook in seconds.

TabLens supports both .twb (Tableau Workbook) and .twbx (Tableau Packaged Workbook) file formats. A .twb file contains the workbook definition and data connection references without embedded data, while a .twbx file is a ZIP-packaged archive that bundles the workbook definition together with any local data extracts. Files up to 15MB in size are supported. Both desktop workbooks and server-exported files are compatible.

Your privacy is our top priority. TabLens processes your workbook on the server without permanently storing it. The uploaded file is deleted immediately after metadata extraction, and the parsed metadata is kept only in your session for the duration of your browser visit. We never share your workbook contents, field names, or calculation logic with any third parties. You can review full privacy details in the Legal Disclaimer.

TabLens extracts a comprehensive set of workbook information including: all worksheet names and their containing dashboards, every data source and its connected fields, field data types (string, integer, date, boolean), calculated field formulas with color-coded dependency highlighting, field roles (dimensions versus measures), field aliases and captions, default aggregation settings, and full calculation dependency chains. The metadata table is fully searchable and sortable, making it easy to audit even the most complex workbooks.

AutoDocs is TabLens's AI-powered documentation generator. After extracting your workbook's metadata, you can trigger AutoDocs to analyze the workbook structure using Google Gemini AI. It produces a professional Markdown document covering an executive summary, worksheet and dashboard descriptions, data source inventories, calculated field explanations, performance recommendations, and a full dependency analysis. You can export the generated documentation as a .md Markdown file or a formatted .html report ready for sharing with your team.

The dependency mindmap is an interactive network graph that visualizes how calculated fields reference each other across your workbook. Each node represents a field — dimensions, measures, and calculated fields are color-coded for clarity. Connecting lines show which calculations depend on which base fields, making it easy to trace complex formula chains at a glance. You can also switch to the Tree View for a hierarchical layout organized by data source. Both views are searchable and zoomable.

TabLens is built for Tableau developers, data engineers, BI consultants, and analytics professionals who work regularly with Tableau workbooks. It is especially valuable when onboarding to unfamiliar workbooks, conducting technical audits for governance or compliance, preparing handover documentation before project transitions, or investigating complex calculation dependency chains. Because TabLens uses the open-source Tableau Document API, no Tableau Desktop or Server license is required to analyze your workbooks.
